Here is the useful version, without the incense-cloud certainty: Mystical experiences are supposed to be beyond language, so naturally researchers built questionnaires. Psychedelic studies repeatedly find experiences involving unity, sacredness, timelessness and ineffability. Measuring them does not settle whether they reveal metaphysical truth.
The cultural residue
Researchers use validated scales to describe recurring features of mystical-type experiences across participants. There is a difference between respecting an experience and accepting every explanation attached to it. We can manage both.
The version worth rescuing
Intensity of mystical experience has sometimes correlated with therapeutic outcomes, but correlation does not prove the mystical state caused the improvement. Anecdotes can point toward a question, but they cannot do the statistical heavy lifting simply because the anecdote is spectacular.
What the poster on the wall is really saying
Culture influences interpretation: “oneness,” God, emptiness, ancestors or neural fireworks can be different stories wrapped around overlapping phenomenology. The sensible version leaves enough room for both fascination and the possibility that the first explanation is wrong.
How the story became bigger than the fact
Science can study what people experience and what follows; it cannot use a symptom scale to adjudicate theology. A dramatic mechanism is still only a mechanism; it does not automatically prove a benefit, a risk or a cosmic interpretation.
What matters most is proportion. Big experiences do not automatically justify big claims, and small studies do not become useless merely because they cannot answer everything.
What to carry forward
If there is a thread worth carrying forward, it is curiosity with brakes. Ask better questions, demand better evidence, and allow the cultural meaning of psychedelics to remain richer than a clinical claim or a marketing line.
