This topic attracts two kinds of writing: breathless evangelism and joyless debunking. Both are lazy. “McKennaii” is a cultivated Psilocybe cubensis label wrapped in Terence McKenna mythology. The name is culturally irresistible. The scientific claims often attached to “strains,” however, are much shakier than cannabis-style strain marketing makes them sound.

Where law and mycology collide

Cultivated P. cubensis varieties can differ in appearance and genetics, but informal strain names are not a standardized pharmacological classification system. A dramatic mechanism is still only a mechanism; it does not automatically prove a benefit, a risk or a cosmic interpretation.

The part mushrooms do without our mythology

Potency varies within a named variety as well as between varieties, so the label cannot guarantee a predictable experience. The temptation to universalize is understandable. Human beings encounter one enormous experience and immediately start writing laws for the cosmos.

Why the substrate matters

Attaching McKenna’s name turns a mushroom into a story about psychedelic history, which is powerful branding and mediocre taxonomy. The useful boundary is not between wonder and skepticism; it is between a claim we can inspect and a story we merely enjoy repeating.

Identification is not a party trick

For mycology, genetics and chemistry matter more than mythology; for culture, mythology is half the point. There is no need to sand the mystery out of the subject. We can keep the mystery and stop pretending it already came with footnotes.

A better question is not “is this real?” but “which part is real in which sense?” Biology, subjective experience, law and culture can all be real while telling different stories about the same object.

Where that leaves us

There is enough here to justify attention and not enough to justify evangelism. That middle ground is less marketable, admittedly, but it is also where most serious understanding begins.
