A Journey into Mental Health Treatment
In recent years, the captivating allure of psychedelic drugs has seized the imagination of scientists, researchers, and inquisitive individuals worldwide. These mind-altering substances, once tied to countercultural movements, are undergoing a notable resurgence as potential instruments for mental health treatment and personal enlightenment. The everyday Joe is seeing the benefits of psychedelic use. Suburban moms are microdosing to cope with the trials of life. Shrinks are beginning to point their patients towards psychedelics, and tech bros everywhere are swarming to the mountains of Peru in search of ayahuasca. In a sense, the revolution that was stunted in the 70s has come back with renewed fervor but in a different slice of the population. While many people are hopeful that this renewed interest in psychotropics could result in better tools to combat mental health issues others raise the concern that perhaps we should be addressing the root problems rather than come up with a “cure”. Entheogens take us back to nature, they bring us closer to (ugh, excuse me for sounding like a hippie but….) mother earth but if our daily routine is the exact opposite, how does this make sense? But alas, this takes us into a different topic altogether.
Psychedelics: From Ancient Wisdom to Modern Science
Psychedelics form a captivating amalgam of science, spirituality, and self-discovery. These substances—such as lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD), psilocybin (found in magic mushrooms), dimethyltryptamine (DMT), and mescaline—have woven themselves into the fabric of cultural and religious practices throughout history. From the ceremonial rituals of ancient civilizations to the cutting-edge studies of contemporary science. The exploration of psychedelics spans epochs. We have known the ancient Greeks used psychedelics during rituals. Psychedelic substances were used in the Americas before Europe ever crossed the puddle. We have records showing that in places like Ireland, England, Scotland etc. mushrooms were used (think ring of faeries etc.) But for some reason there was a gap of time when they fell into obscurity. Ancient civilizations across the globe, from the Native Americans to Indigenous tribes of the Amazon rainforest, integrated psychedelic drugs into rituals to commune with the divine and gain profound insights into existence. Why did we stop? The utilization of these psychoactive substances for spiritual enlightenment and healing resonates deeply with humanity’s primordial essence. What made us forget?
Decoding the Altered Mind: The Science Behind Psychedelics
At the core of the psychedelic experience lies the profound alteration of perception, cognition, and emotion. By primarily targeting serotonin receptors in the brain, these substances induce surreal sensory distortions and intensify emotional experiences. Often the experience is one that transcends ordinary reality. The reason it is so difficult to explain is that you suddenly have access to a spectrum of information that we simply do not access during normal times. Imagine, if you will, explaining what the color of time tastes like. Having a deep psychedelic experience often makes you question what reality actually is. It shakes the foundations that we take for granted and forces a new perspective into view that often leads to positive changes in behavior. We do not quite understand why this happens, but we do have some insight. For example, we know that the number of synaptic connections multiplies while on psychedelics. This means your brain is firing on all cylinders and engaging the turbo. We know which receptors in the brain are affected and so on, but none of these things can explain the profound experiences we often see while on entheogens.
Revolutionizing Mental Health Treatment
After years of marginalization and prohibition, psychedelic therapies are re-emerging in scientific and medical communities. Groundbreaking clinical studies are unraveling their potential to address an array of mental health disorders, including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depressive disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and addiction. Why is it that psychedelics resets the brain the way it does? We really don’t know, but there is enough anecdotal evidence to know it has huge potential. The stigma around psychedelics will take some time to unravel, it makes sense after the decades of negative propaganda the government released. During the Nixon presidency the war on drugs was declared, most people at the time thought this was because psychedelics would deter people from joining the war efforts and cause them to “drop out”. Others claimed that the reason for the war to be declared on psychedelics was simply ignorance. As a result, millions were spent on propaganda campaigns to terrify the public and steer the masses away from these substances. Whatever the reason may have been, the result was decades of prohibition and, as such, a stop to all scientific research. Fortunately there is a shift in attitude and scientific research has once more commenced, already yielding promising results.
Psychedelics and Mental Health: A Paradigm Shift
In a departure from conventional treatment modalities, psychedelic therapies are emerging as innovative tools in mental health care. Psilocybin-assisted therapy, for example, exhibits promise in alleviating treatment-resistant depression and fostering enduring positive changes in patients. It is as if the repeating patterns we usually follow were suddenly turned off, and we were given a chance to change direction. Psychedelic drugs offer a versatile toolkit for therapists, addressing conditions ranging from PTSD to chronic pain. Facilitating introspection and emotional healing, these substances hold significant promise in therapeutic settings, guiding individuals toward profound personal growth and resilience. The problem I personally see with this is that most of these health care professionals have not had a psychedelic experience. And believe me, this is not the type of thing you can read about and just understand. If you do not navigate these waters at least a number of times, you simply do not know. Heck, you could argue that even if you have done it a number of times, it is difficult to understand, thus guiding someone else gets tricky.
Unlocking Mystical Experiences: The Subjective Effects of Psychedelics
Beyond therapeutic benefits, psychedelic experiences often evoke mystical-type experiences, providing profound personal meaning and spiritual connection. These subjective effects underscore the transformative potential of psychedelic medicine, offering individuals new perspectives on existence. Most reductionists change their tune to that of, ok, maybe here is something other than this plain reality. Perhaps reality has layers upon layers and goes well beyond what I see. If that is the case, what possibilities are there?
Navigating Legal Landscapes: From Illicit to Legalized
As interest in psychedelic research burgeons, legal frameworks evolve. Some jurisdictions decriminalize or legalize psychedelics for therapeutic or religious use, acknowledging their potential benefits while addressing safety concerns. However, the legal status remains complex, with regulatory authorities grappling with the delicate balance between public safety and individual liberty. Sadly, at the time of this writing, the vote to legalize MDMA for PTSD treatment just came in and was negative. The trend however appears to be one of change, where psychedelics will be rescheduled soon.
Challenges and Opportunities: The Future of Psychedelic Research
While psychedelic studies unveil promising effects, challenges endure. Understanding the effects of psychedelic compounds on mental health treatments and integrating them responsibly into psychiatric care demand ongoing research and collaboration. The voyage of psychedelic exploration presents a spectrum of promise and complexity, underscoring the imperative for cautious navigation. After all, how do you quantify a noetic experience? How do you put into words the mystical side of things? How can you prepare someone for a bad trip? We think we know fear, right until the moment when a bad trip goes berserk, and you are met with sheer terror. The flip side of that coin is that the benefits are equally great, and the silver lining is that even those terrifying “bad trips” tend to produce positive results. More research, more understanding and time will hopefully yield a deeper understanding and better tools to aid in mental health.
Exploration
Beyond mental health and the pursue of enlightenment there are other benefits to psychedelics. There is a rich history of folk tales, stories and history that we do not quite understand because alas, we have not taken these mind altering drugs. Let me explain, when you read about faries and gnomes and all the northern legends. When you read about countless stories from the past, we tend to not realize they were experience whiled under the influence. This makes it impossible for these stories to be understood. Beyond that, when you begin to realize that many of the experiences in these realms of the mind are shared by most psychonauts, it opens up a million questions. In the imperial collegue of London they are starting to investigate these shared experiences and these spaces that everyone seems to agree on. By administering DMT and keeping the trip going for hours they are able to map out the landscape of these crazy places and see how different psychonauts agree on their experiences. Perhaps there is a new frontier here, perhaps there is something to be explored and maybe, just maybe the knowledge we glean from these studies will help us crack the hard problem of consciousness.
In Conclusion
The domain of psychedelic medicine blends ancient wisdom with modern science, offering a gateway to profound insights and transformative experiences. As our comprehension deepens, we stand at the threshold of a new era in mental health treatment and human consciousness. From the depths of despair to the heights of transcendence, the exploration of psychedelics illuminates the resilience of the human spirit and the boundless horizons of the mind. We are in one of the most interesting moments in time, where our understanding of science and our development of technology is allowing for a deeper understanding of the human condition. These advancements coupled with the study of psychedelics will likely give rise to a new paradigm and a massive leap forward for humanity, at least that is our hope.
