This topic attracts two kinds of writing: breathless evangelism and joyless debunking. Both are lazy. Psychedelic neuroscience has moved from “look, colorful brain scan” toward models of receptor signaling, network integration, predictive processing and plasticity. None of those models, by itself, explains why a person sometimes meets God in a carpet pattern.

The mechanism is interesting; the certainty is not

Classic psychedelics share strong 5-HT2A receptor activity, especially in cortical systems. Interest survives uncertainty just fine. In fact, most of the genuinely interesting questions begin after the certainty has been removed.

The evidence underneath the spectacle

Imaging studies often show altered communication across networks and reduced rigidity in patterns associated with ordinary self-processing. Treating a hypothesis as a hypothesis is not cynicism. It is how you keep an interesting idea alive long enough to find out whether it is true.

The part worth testing

Measures of entropy or complexity can increase, but “more entropy” is not a synonym for “better brain.” That is a narrower claim than the mythology usually offers, but narrower claims have the useful habit of being checkable.

Where the story gets exaggerated

Neuroplasticity findings are scientifically important while still being easy to overmarket; cellular change does not automatically equal clinical transformation. A useful explanation should survive contact with the awkward details, including the details that refuse to fit the preferred narrative.

A better question is not “is this real?” but “which part is real in which sense?” Biology, subjective experience, law and culture can all be real while telling different stories about the same object.

Where that leaves us

There is enough here to justify attention and not enough to justify evangelism. That middle ground is less marketable, admittedly, but it is also where most serious understanding begins.
